About the Business
The name ‘Cannon’ has been associated within the steel industry for nearly 50 years. Derived from Cannon Street, London EC4, Philip Winterflood worked there as a senior salesman for Lye Trading Merchants specialising in sheet steel before embarking on Cannon Steels Ltd operating from his home ‘office’ then expanding to offices above East Finchley underground station. He boasted clients such as Belling Cookers and Metamec Clocks growing into areas of merchanting re-rolled, plate, sections and importing. During his expansion of salesmen, each of the three sons joined the company creating the ‘family’ business.
In 1981 the youngest son Jeremy decided to encroach on the physical side of stockholding to specialise in a niche market for the localised builders aiming at the ‘cut to length RSJ’ trade. A corner area was rented from the British Waterways Board in Brimsdown, Enfield, Cannon stocked a small range of popular RSJ’s, took a quick demonstration of propane cutting, a local advert in the free ‘rag’ then Jeremy set off in his Mother’s borrowed car to distribute leaflets for local tradesman in the effort to kick start the business.
